Every great robotics program has an origin story, and for Bomb Squad, the years from 1996 to 2000 laid the foundation for everything the team would become. These early seasons were full of firsts: the first robots, the first competitions, and the first victories. Together, they set the tone for a culture built on innovation, teamwork, and community impact.
Bomb Squad was officially founded in 1996 under the guidance of a dedicated group of engineers and faculty from Baxter Healthcare Corporation. Their mentorship brought real‑world engineering into the classroom and gave students hands‑on experience with tools, problem-solving, and design long before STEM education became mainstream. Those early days focused on learning, experimenting, and discovering what a student‑driven engineering team could accomplish. The foundation they created, both technically and culturally, continues to shape the program today.

Just two years after forming, the team earned its first regional victory in 1998. For such a young team, this achievement became a defining moment. It proved that their hard work, long nights, and willingness to push boundaries were paying off. More importantly, it showed students that they could compete at a high level while continuing to learn and grow.

Momentum continued into 1999 when the team secured its second regional win, strengthening its reputation as a rising force in the FIRST Robotics Competition. That same year, Bomb Squad expanded its reach by launching a LEGO League program. This new initiative created a full pipeline of STEM opportunities for younger students in the community and in surrounding cities. Many future Bomb Squad members got their start through this effort.

By the year 2000, Bomb Squad had grown into more than a robotics team. It had become a leader in the community. That year, the team earned one of FIRST's highest honors: the Chairman’s Award. This recognition celebrated not only technical excellence but also the team’s commitment to outreach, mentorship, and FIRST's core values. It marked the close of Bomb Squad’s early chapter and the beginning of a legacy that would continue to grow for decades.
